ANNAPOLIS, MD — Bed Bath & Beyond recently closed its Annapolis Town Center store, located at 200 Harker Place in Suite 200. The company announced this planned closure in January.

The store was still open when Patch visited on March 6, but the shelves were mostly empty thanks to a blowout sale. The business was vacant and had closure notices posted outside when we returned this Monday.

The closure comes as the struggling company shutters a swath of locations across the country.

Bed Bath & Beyond, which is on the verge of bankruptcy, has closed five Maryland stores this year. Another two are scheduled in the near future.

Along with the Annapolis store, the chain has already closed its locations in Hagerstown, Bel Air, Westminster and Ocean City.

Bed Bath & Beyond will also close its stores in the towns of Germantown and California, Maryland.

"Closing sales will commence and continue over the next few weeks and months," the company told Patch in a Tuesday email.

The former home merchandise giant also closed its Gaithersburg, Hanover and Salisbury stores in 2020.

"While the decision to close a store is always a difficult one, customers can continue to shop with us 24/7 online at bedbathandbeyond.com and our mobile app," the company said.

Bed Bath & Beyond did not answer our questions about how many employees were laid off and whether they had the chance to transfer to other locations.

Bed Bath & Beyond will have six Maryland stores left by the end of the year. Those will be in:

  • Columbia
  • Frederick
  • Gambrills
  • Rockville
  • Towson
  • Waldorf

Bed Bath & Beyond announced last September that it would close 150 of its 900+ locations. Additional closure announcements followed.

The company now plans to close about 400 total stores, the Associated Press reported this February.

The Associated Press said the business has defaulted on its loans and said in government paperwork that it may need to file for bankruptcy.

Forbes said Bed Bath & Beyond is currently planning to consolidate its outstanding stock into fewer shares, making each share worth more. Company leaders think this would raise $300 million, but shareholders still need to approve the proposal at their May 9 meeting.

If shareholders don't approve the stock consolidation plan, Forbes said Bed Bath & Beyond may be "unable to avoid bankruptcy."

Bed Bath & Beyond's stock peaked at roughly $80 per share in 2013. It's now worth $0.28 per share.
