Sports Betting May Debut At Waterfront Venue In Anne Arundel County

Sports betting may be coming to a waterfront venue in Anne Arundel County. The events hall currently hosts weddings.

RIVA, MD — A waterfront events venue in Riva is nearing approval for a sports betting facility license.

Michael's on the South River, operated by Kathe P. Hospitality, may soon be able to host sports betting. The business currently holds weddings in its 225-person reception hall, located at 3027 Riva Road next to Mike's Restaurant & Crabhouse.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission on Jan. 26 found Kathe P. Hospitality qualified for a sports wagering facility license. There are still some steps before the final approval, however.

The first review conducted "background investigations to determine whether an applicant has demonstrated the honesty, integrity, good character and financial stability to be qualified for a sports wagering license."

The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission is now expected to consider Kathe P. Hospitality for a license award at its Feb. 15 meeting.

A press release said this commission "evaluates applicants’ suitability and determines whether awarding a license to an applicant is in the public interest."

Kathe P. Hospitality has not yet identified a partner sports betting operator, also known as a sportsbook.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission also found Canton Gaming, LLC qualified for licenses at The Greene Turtle sports bars in Canton and Towson. Canton Gaming will use Parx Interactive Maryland (BetParx) as its sportsbook for these locations.

The commission additionally found Crab Sports Maryland and SBOpco, LLC (Super Book) qualified for mobile sports wagering licenses.

These companies are all slated to be considered for final license awards at the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission's Feb. 15 meeting.

If the businesses are awarded a license, they "must conduct a controlled demonstration, ensuring that its systems and internal control procedures are functioning correctly."

If these checks are successful, Maryland Lottery and Gaming would issue licenses letting sports betting begin at each location.

There is not yet a timeline for these checks or a betting launch date.
