BETHESDA, MD — The clothing retailer Express said in April it planned to close three stores in Maryland as the chain goes through bankruptcy proceedings. A report on Monday said the Bethesda site will also close.

The Montgomery Mall store in Bethesda is also set to shutter, the MOCO Show reported Monday.

A store representative told the site Monday morning that an exact date is not yet available for the Bethesda closure, but that “everything must go” and there are currently sales of 20 percent off full-priced items.

The fashion retailer filed for bankruptcy protection April 22, and three Maryland stores were among the nearly 100 named then as slated for closure, according to a report by The Hill.

As part of a restructuring process that aims to strengthen its business, the company announced that it intends to close about 95 Express stores.

The Maryland Express stores set to close, according to the bankruptcy filing, are:

  • Wheaton: Westfield Wheaton mall, 11160 Veirs Mill Road
  • Baltimore: Towson Town Center, 8200 Perry Hall Boulevard
  • Salisbury: 2300 North Salisbury Boulevard, that store is no longer listed on the Express website

Shoppers can still visit the Express stores in Annapolis Mall or Columbia Mall, and the Express Factory store at the Clarksburg Premium Outlets will remain open. Operations will continue as usual at stores that will remain open, according to the company.

"We continue to make meaningful progress refining our product assortments, driving demand, connecting with customers and strengthening our operations," Stewart Glendinning, the chief executive officer of Express, Inc., wrote in a news release Monday. "We are taking an important step that will strengthen our financial position and enable Express to continue advancing our business initiatives."
