4th Round Of HoCo Higher Entrepreneurs Awarded

The fourth round of HoCo Higher entrepreneurs have produced five finalists with monetary award winners identified.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Five companies have received monetary prizes after winning a “shark tank” style pitch competition in Howard County’s 10-week entrepreneur accelerator program, HoCo Higher. The Laundry Basket, Tutoring with a Twist, Tidy Milso, Candelicioso and The Lotus Legacy were all finalists among the 19 entrepreneurs completing the program this year.

Launched in September 2021, HoCo Higher was spearheaded by Howard County Executive Calvin Ball in partnership with the Howard County Economic Development Authority and M & T Bank. The program for small businesses and entrepreneurs provides training and support that is required for building more opportunities for underserved markets in the county. In its first three rounds, more than 60 small businesses received more than $300,000 in support. In addition to the pitch competition winners, each participant received $5,000 in seed funding.

“We know our community could not thrive without the innovation, courage and commitment of small businesses,” said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. “HoCo Higher, with this fourth cohort, is one way we are helping these imaginative entrepreneurs bring their ideas, products and solutions to reality. With these important resources and support structures, the possibilities for growth and success are endless.”

During the past 10 weeks, entrepreneurs followed a curriculum curated by M&T Bank, the region’s top small-business lender. The curriculum included lessons from presenters on legal formation, business planning, obtaining certifications, managing business and personal finances, sourcing capital, pricing strategies, risk management and business insurance, marketing strategies and more.

“The Howard County Economic Development Authority and the Maryland Innovation Center is once again proud to partner with M&T Bank and the County Executive Calvin Ball to support the HoCo Higher program that offers tools and techniques for entrepreneurs to accelerate their business.” said HCEDA CEO Lawrence Twele. “This along with a variety of other programs at the Innovation Center (#BRITE) are available to help current and prospective entrepreneurs grow or start a business and provide opportunities for our community.”
