2 Silver Spring Students Win Gold At National History Day Competition

A project by two middle-school students from Silver Spring garnered a gold medal at the National History Day competition earlier this month.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Two Silver Spring middle-schoolers received the Outstanding State Entry (Junior Division) during the National History Day competition that took place June 11–15, at the University of Maryland in College Park.

Diana Ince and Rebecca McCracken, who attend Eastern Middle School, received a gold medal for their group performance, The Negative Impact of the Lewis and Clark Expedition on Native Americans. The duo's history teacher is Ryann Flynn.

Ince and McCracken weren't the only Montgomery County students to distinguish themselves at the College Park event.

Laura Civillico, who attends Poolesville High School, received a scholarship to attend the National History Academy for her paper, Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Frontier of Gender Roles in America. Civillico's history teacher is Jennifer Marks.

In addition, a project submitted by fellow Poolesville High students Rhia Basit, Ava Milisits, and Kyna Owusu will be showcased at the National Museum of American History. Their senior group exhibit was André Leon Talley's Closet: The Frontier of Fashion. The trio's history teacher is Stephanie Gomer.
