HALETHORPE, MD — UPS, also known as the United Parcel Service, is laying off 118 employees this month at its Halethorpe sorting facility.

The layoffs at 3901 Vero Road take effect on March 26.

The Halethorpe layoffs were announced on Jan. 26 on Maryland's Work Adjustment and Retraining Notification dashboard. Most large employers are required to give at least 60 calendar days notice before mass layoffs.

"We often evaluate our operations and flex our network to meet volume demands," UPS spokesperson Natasha Amadi told Patch in a Monday email. "This allows us to continue delivering industry-leading service while also maintaining competitive prices."

The shipping company said it's "reducing the package sorting operations at a few UPS facilities," including the one in Halethorpe.

The hub's day sort line will close when the layoffs take effect later this month.

"Our employees are extremely important to us, and we understand the impact this may have on their families," Amadi said. "We will work with those who may be impacted throughout the process to provide support."

The facility is located in southwestern Baltimore County, near Interstates 95 and 695.
