Massachusetts Weather Forecast: Schools Close as Totals Increase

The National Weather Service issued winter storm and blizzard warnings as parts of Mass. brace for up to 18 inches of snow.

BOSTON, MA - Snow will start falling in Massachusetts early Monday morning, with totals expected to reach 18 inches in some parts of the state.

Snowfall could reach 12 inches in the Boston area and might get as high as 18 in parts of Southeastern Mass. and the Cape, the National Weather Service said. The snow will start in the early morning - about 4 a.m. - and continue late into the night.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather warning for much of the state that will be in effect from Monday morning into Tuesday morning. A blizzard warning was issued for Plymouth County and the Cape, where winds could gust 70 miles per hour.

Just days after an unexpected system dumped up to a foot of snow, downed trees and power lines, and left tens of thousands without electricity, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency said Sunday morning to expect more of the same.

Schools were being closed around the state Sunday night, many of which were canceled Friday as well. Some towns had declared snow emergencies and implemented parking bans.

The National Weather Service currently says there is at least a chance of snow showers every day from Monday to Thursday.
