These MA Nursing Homes Have The Most Confirmed Coronavirus Cases
Massachusetts officials released how many confirmed coronavirus cases each nursing home, rest home and skilled nursing facilities have.
MASSACHUSETTS — The new coronavirus has preyed on the most vulnerable members of the population, attacking older residents in particular and ravaging places like elderly facilities with deadly speed. Staff and residents at long-term care facilities account for more than half the deaths in Massachusetts, according to new state date.
The average age of people who have died of COVID-19 in those facilities is 81, the state Department of Pubic Health revealed Monday. The death rate of those 80 and older is 393 per 100,000, more than four times as high as the next hardest-hit age group.
The infection rate among those 80 and older has skyrocketed with increased testing at long-term care facilities, according to state data.

Such facilities have seen fatality numbers pile up at a stunning rate. The Soldiers' Home in Holyoke is under federal scrutiny after more than 62 people died, most of whom tested positive for COVID-19.
On Monday, the DPH revealed nursing homes, rest homes and skilled nursing facilities with at least two reported cases of COVID-19, including cases among staff and residents. Assisted-living facilities were not included in the data.

The DPH only announced the number of cases in broad terms: Fewer than 10, between 10-30 and more than 30. More than a third of the facilities fell in the highest range, while the true number could be much higher. The number of confirmed cases is not the number of overall cases, as not all residents and staff have been tested across the state.
