SHREWSBURY, MA — A unique coffee shop chain born out of a social media movement will soon open in Shrewsbury, the first Massachusetts location for MOTW Coffee.

A sign for the MOTW Coffee shop recently went up at the Marketplace shopping plaza near the intersection of Route 9 and Maple Avenue. The company said in a June 3 Facebook post that the shop will open "in a few short weeks."

"Congrats to our newest franchise owners, Kader and Salwa, they have worked really hard thus far and we know they are going to crush it and hold up the MOTW standards of excellence," the post said.

The coffee shop chain grew out of the Instagram page Muslims of the World started by Sajjad Shah. After attracting nearly 1 million followers, Shah and his wife decided to move the digital platform into the real world.

"Thus, the MOTW Coffee Shop was born — a place where stories, culture, and philanthropy converge over a cup of coffee. It’s not just a coffee shop; it’s the embodiment of years of digital community-building, now available as a warm, welcoming space for all," the company's website says.

MOTW Coffee shops serve a range of drinks, from specialty lattes (cardamom, rosemary and honey) to a variety of chai styles. The shops also serve specialty pastries like baklava, date cookies and pistachio bird nests.

The Shrewsbury shop will be the chain's second in New England following the opening of a shop in New Haven in January. The chain also operates four shops in and around Indianapolis and one in a suburb of Chicago.
