EDINA, MN — A proposed development that includes more than 100 affordable senior housing units in Edina is set to receive a grant worth more than $661,000 from the Metropolitan Council.

The Met Council is awarding almost $14 million in grants to projects that promote efficiency by giving people the opportunity to bike or walk to many destinations or allowing them to live closer to public transit.

Plans for the Cornelia View development call for 118 units of affordable senior housing to be built near Southdale Center in Edina.

Ecumen and Lupe Development Partners plan to tear down an existing office building at 4040 W. 70th St. to build a three- or four-story building with affordable senior housing units and high-end amenities.

The developers have said monthly rent will range from $650 to $1,600, with the affordable housing units meant for retired seniors who earn between $22,000 and $58,000 per year.

The building will offer one- and two-bedroom units, with developers planning to build a fitness center, a business center, a community room with a kitchen and more.

The approved Cornelia View proposal also includes plans for 86 underground parking stalls and 23 above-ground spaces.

Construction on the development at 4040 W. 70th St. is expected to start in 2023, according to city officials.

The Metropolitan Council is set to grant $661,550 to the project from the Livable Communities program’s Demonstration Account, which funds affordable housing developments, connections between land uses and mixed-use developments close to public transit.

“Community design that improves access to amenities, jobs, recreation and so on makes us a more livable and mobile region and more economically successful,” Met Council Chair Charlie Zelle said.
