CONCORD, NH — A man from the Lakes Region faces several felony charges after an incident on Hall Street in September.

Around 10 a.m. on Sept. 22, two women met with police about a robbery and assault at the Speedway on Hall Street. Earlier that morning, one of the women stopped at the gas station to pick up some cigarettes while the other woman stayed in the vehicle. The woman inside the vehicle was reclined, resting her eyes, and dozing off when she heard a man telling her, “Give me all your money.”

As the man was yelling, the victim said, she felt the man’s hand around her neck. The man was squeezing her neck and yelling at her. The woman pulled herself up to try and get into an upright position while he held onto her neck for around 30 seconds, a report said.

The man wore sunglasses and a hoodie, but she recognized him as Jason John Malo, 26, her ex from half a dozen years ago, an affidavit said.

The victim accused Malo of continuing to scream at her, demanding money, and threatening to punch her. The woman told Malo she had no money and he punched her in the face with a closed fist, the report said.

The reporting officer confirmed the woman’s cheek was swollen and she had red marks on her neck.

Malo was accused of rifling around, finding a purse on the floor of the vehicle, and began walking to his vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, and he fled the scene.

The second woman came back to the vehicle after seeing the incident occur while inside the store. After speaking with the victim, she drove her to police headquarters.

While the reporting officer was taking statements, a second officer went to the gas station to obtain video footage of the incident. The two women were seen driving into the parking lot, one woman entered the store, and a thin white man wearing a dark sweatshirt and empty-handed approached the other vehicle. On the video, the officer “could not see what exactly the male was doing,” but about two minutes later, the man walked back to his car and “appeared to be carrying a purse” in his hand. The man then fled the scene, the officer wrote.

A warrant was issued against Malo, who lives on Stockbridge Corner Road in Alton, on robbery, second-degree assault-strangulation, and second-degree assault-strangulation-domestic violence charges, all felonies, as well as simple assault and domestic violence-simple assault charges. He was arrested four days later.

Malo has a lengthy criminal history, including an active controlled drug: acts prohibited and controlled drug: controlled premises where drugs kept charges out of Manchester from August. He failed to appear at an arraignment on Sept. 1. Malo has a dispositional conference hearing for those charges in Hillsborough County Superior Court North on Nov. 16.

In 2018, he was arrested in Rochester on a drug possession charge and burglary, theft, and criminal mischief charges out of Alton that all were later nolle prossed. Malo pleaded guilty to a controlled premise charge out of Rochester in 2018.

Malo also faced a drug sales charge in Alton, which he later pleaded guilty to. He also pleaded guilty to three controlled drug act charges and felony theft charges out of Alton in 2019.

In 2020 and 2021, he was arrested and convicted on felony drug possession charges in Alton.
