Highest Household Bills In NJ: See Which Towns Pay The Most Each Month

NEW JERSEY— Some New Jersey residents spend more than $4,000 on their household bills each month, according to a new study comparing the most expensive counties and cities in every state.

A new report by payment network Doxo shows that the average American household spends $24,557 per year on the most important household bills. These include mortgage and rent payments, utility bills, insurance costs, car payments, phone bills, and other monthly costs.

The report, which reflects actual bill payment activity in more than 97 percent of U.S. zip codes, identifies the most and least expensive states for Americans to live in based on average monthly spending on actual household bill payments.

The average household in America spends $2,046 per month on the ten most common household bills, according to the report. The Doxo report also identifies the most expensive cities to live in by state, based on the average amount of these bills.

"As consumers navigate their household bills in today’s volatile marketplace, bill payers may feel left in the dark, not fully understanding how much they are truly paying each month," said Liz Powell, Senior Director of Insights at Doxo.

And as the cost of living in the United States continues to rise, residents of Hawaii, California, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Maryland may be feeling more pressure, as these states top the list of the most expensive.

New Jersey is the third-most expensive state in the nation for household expenses, with expenses 33.2 percent more than the national average, Doxo’s analysis shows.

Garden State residents pay an average of $8,165 more per year than the national average to cover their household bills, according to the Doxo report, which examines the $3.87 trillion U.S. consumer bill pay market. Residents pay more than the national average for monthly mortgage payments, rent bills, auto insurance, and utilities, the study shows.

“Household bills account for 35 percent of annual household income of $92,374 in New Jersey,” said the study.

How much is that per month? Doxo shows that the average New Jersey household pays $2,727 every month on bills - or $32,722 per year. But in some towns and cities, the cost is even higher.

Here are the top 10 cities in New Jersey with the highest household bills, according to the Doxo report. The state average is $2,727 per month.

  1. Princeton: Residents average $4,052 per month on household bills.
  2. Hoboken: $3,851 per month.
  3. South Orange: $3,790 per month.
  4. Ridgewood: $3,716 per month.
  5. Westfield: $3,656 per month.
  6. Princeton Junction: $3,648 per month.
  7. Chatham: $3,606 per month.
  8. Summit: $3,592 per month.
  9. Livingston: $3,591 per month.
  10. Montclair: $3,559 per month
