Hillsborough Resident Tests Positive For Coronavirus

Eight new positive cases of the new coronavirus were reported in Somerset County on Wednesday.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A Hillsborough resident has tested positive for the new coronavirus, the township announced Wednesday. This is the first positive COVID-19 case in Hillsborough.

The resident had close contact with a coworker in Middlesex County that had previously tested positive for COVID-19. The resident is currently in isolation, Hillsborough Township officials announced.

"The Hillsborough Township Health Department is monitoring the resident and is working with the state to identify any potential contacts for follow-up," said Siobhan Spano, Health Officer.

Eight new positive cases of the new coronavirus were reported in Somerset County on Wednesday. Gov. Phil Murphy announced that the state had 162 new positive tests on Wednesday, raising the total number of cases to 427. There were also two more deaths brings the death total to five. The Township had declared a state of emergency on Tuesday which put several new measures into effect, such as closing municipal buildings to the public. (See Related: Hillsborough Declares State Of Emergency As Coronavirus Spreads)

Additionally both Hillsborough and Montgomery schools have closed for two weeks and have implemented remote learning. (See Related: Hillsborough Schools To Close For 2 Weeks, Start Alternate Plan)

Hillsborough residents are reminded to:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick (within 6 feet).
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If they are not available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs, switches, cabinet handles, remotes, tables, counters, sinks, toilets, etc.

If sick residents should:

  • Stay home. Avoid close contact with other people (within 6 feet), including family members.
  • Cover your sneeze or cough with a tissue or your sleeve, not your hands.
  • Call your doctor if your symptoms get worse or if you have trouble breathing.
