HOBOKEN, NJ — A popular Hoboken bar/restaurant where future spouses met, and where Giants quarterback Eli Manning sometimes dined with his family while living a block away, announced Sunday that it has closed for good. The owner did not give a reason, but had posted on Facebook in March that he had had to close five times since the start of the pandemic.

In a farewell post, Thomas Brennan said that Saturday night was the last call for his corner eatery at 14th and Hudson streets.

Two customers responded that they had met their spouse there. Others praised the staff and the food.

"So sad and wishing the very best to all the staff, past and present," wrote one woman. "We had dinner at the bar at least twice a week at the Tavern before we left Hoboken. Tom, you ran a great establishment."

Another woman wrote, "My husband and I met there, celebrated our engagement there and if we are honest named our daughter after this bar. It was a wonderful place full of great people, an amazing turkey burger and lots of cold beer."

Because of the pandemic, they had even had to close on St. Patrick's Day:

Space Listed For Sale

Last month, the space was listed for sale. "Currently being used as a restaurant, business can be purchased separately," says the listing.

While New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning was living in Hoboken's Tea Building on 15th Street (he moved to Summit in 2016), he was sometimes spotted dining outside the tavern, a block away.

While many of the mile-square city's bars are situated on the south end of town near the train station, Hudson Tavern, in a quieter neighborhood two blocks from the north waterfront, attracted its own crowd. "HT was like our local Cheers pub," wrote a fan on Instagram. "You will be missed!"
