2 Killed In Mercer County On Wednesday During Ida Flooding

Hopewell Township Police said they conducted 50 overnight water rescue operations which resulted in two fatalities.

MERCER COUNTY, NJ – Two people from Hopewell Township were killed Wednesday as remanents of Hurricane Ida unleashed severe flooding, the police department said. The names of the deceased have not been released.

Major and secondary roadways were impassable throughout Hopewell as motorists were stranded.

Police said they conducted 50 overnight water rescue operations which resulted in two fatalities.

Meanwhile, three Hopewell Township police officers were rescued after they were swept away by raging floodwaters. They hung on trees for almost two hours, until help arrived.

On Thursday, the Nation Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down in Princeton during the raging thunderstorm. The Storm damage survey team confirmed an EF-0 tornado in Princeton, with estimated peak winds up to 75 mph. This was the sixth confirmed tornado in New Jersey.

Officials have linked at least nine New Jerseyans' deaths to Ida, as the state continues to recover from the storm. People lost homes, streets remain flooded and public transportation has been hampered.
