Northland Pool Won't Reopen In Summer 2023 In Livingston: Here's Why

LIVINGSTON, NJ — Livingston has kicked off signups on Tuesday for pool membership and summer camp (see links and details here), but the Township Council is debating the future of one of the pools in town.

The Northland Pool won't reopen this summer, township officials said this week.

However, residents can sign up to use the Haines Pool starting this Memorial Day and through the summer (read more here).

The Northland Pool needs at least $70,000 of electrical work, and possibly more for other work, officials told the Township Council at the Jan. 9 meeting, according to a story in the West Essex Tribune.

According to the story, even if the council takes steps to bid out the work on time, there's no guarantee the pool would be ready to open before the end of summer.

Senior, Youth and Leisure Services director Jennifer Walker and Aquatics Supervisor Ron Barbella spoke to the council about the various options. In addition, the Pool Utility lost money during the pandemic, they said.

Now, the mayor and council must decide whether to fix the pool in time for summer 2024, or have a new pool constructed. But in the meantime, they didn't want to delay planning for summer camp and pool use for this coming summer.
