Ruth's Chris Steakhouse To Open At Short Hills Mall This Month

MILLBURN, NJ — The Ruth's Chris Steakhouse chain will open its next location in the Short Hills Mall in Millburn, Jersey Digs reported Wednesday. A mall spokesperson said later that day that the restaurant will open "on or about" Sept. 12.

The site for the new location notes, "Menu items include: steaks and chops, seafood and specialities, appetizers and sides, soups and salads, desserts and specialty diet items. Amenities include: private event spaces."

Who Are Ruth And Chris, Anyway?

The steakhouse chain, founded by single mom Ruth Fertel in New Orleans in 1965, has more than 100 locations across the U.S. Does the name confuse you? The site explains that Ruth was the person who bought Chris Steak House in New Orleans, then had to move.

"When a kitchen fire destroyed Chris Steak House in 1976, Ruth was forced to relocate her business," the site says, "but the Chris Steak House name wasn’t allowed to come along. Short on time, Ruth improvised, adding her own name to the sign. That made it “Ruth’s Chris Steak house” and our legendary name was born."

The Short Hills Mall keeps an updated list of stores currently open in the mall here. Restaurants include Cheesecake Factory, Nordstrom Marketplace Cafe, Qdoba and more.
