NEW JERSEY — A winter storm warning remained in effect for 16 counties on Sunday for New Jersey's second winter storm in the week, which expected to bring as many as 6 to 8 inches to the Garden State. Three COVID-19 vaccine mega-sites were closed, and highway restrictions are now in place (see the hour-by-hour forecast for your area and road and other impacts below).

Areas not impacted by the snow could feel the slippery effects of rain, a wintry mix and possible flooding, causing problems for travelers in South Jersey and the Jersey Shore.

Snow estimates fell overnight because temperatures in South Jersey and the Jersey Shore are not supposed to fall too low.

Find out what's happening in Ocean Citywith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Snow was captured on video and in pictures after it began falling in some areas as late as 8 a.m.

The storm could be troublesome as it comes in the heels of a nor'easter that left as many as 35 inches in some parts of New Jersey.

The snow and wintry weather could also cause problems for anyone who is expected to travel to watch the Super Bowl, although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's COVID-19 guidelines advise that people should not travel or gather together for the big game.

Here are the alerted areas:

Snow total estimates were reduced since temperatures in South Jersey and at the Jersey Shore could rise above freezing during the expected duration of the storm, which was supposed to begin around 4 a.m. and last until as late as 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Snow total estimates could rise if the weather stays cold in those areas.

Here are the expected snow accumulations:

New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti has issued a commercial vehicle travel restriction on multiple Interstate highways in New Jersey starting at 6 a.m. on Sunday.

Winter weather is expected to begin in the southern region of the state early Sunday morning and move northward, resulting in difficult driving conditions. The travel restrictions are being coordinated with neighboring states. In addition to the commercial restrictions, all motorists are strongly encouraged to stay off the roads on Sunday. The safest place to be is at home.

The commercial vehicle travel restriction will be in place for the entire length of the following highways in both directions:

  • I-78, from the Pennsylvania border to I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike)
  • I-80, from the Pennsylvania border to I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike)
  • I-280, from I-80 to I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike)
  • I-287, from NJ Route 440 to the New York State border
  • NJ Route 440, from the Outerbridge Crossing to I-287

The commercial vehicle travel restriction applies to:

  • Empty straight CDL-weighted trucks
  • Passenger vehicles pulling trailers
  • Recreational vehicles
  • Motorcycles

This restriction DOES NOT apply to:

  • The New Jersey Turnpike
  • The Garden State Parkway
  • The Atlantic City Expressway
  • I-76
  • I-195
  • I-295
  • I-676
  • Public safety vehicles, sworn and civilian public safety personnel; as well as other personnel directly supporting healthcare facilities or critical infrastructure such as providing fuel or food. For a complete list of operations or personnel that are exempt from the travel ban, see the Administrative Order.

Trucks that are already in New Jersey when the travel restrictions go into place are encouraged to pull off in truck stops to wait out the storm – DO NOT PARK ON SHOULDERS.

Early Sunday morning, NJDOT was to deploy its Incline Package assets on I-280 and I-78 at Jugtown mountain (between Exits 7 and 11), which includes pre-positioning towing assets, NJDOT Safety Service Patrol (SSP) trucks, and coordination with New Jersey State Police. Additional towing assets are prepositioned statewide to assist disabled vehicles to ensure Interstate and State highways remain clear for plow crews.

Gov. Phil Murphy also announced that three COVID-19 vaccine mega-sites were closed on Sunday because of the storm. Read more: 3 COVID-19 Vaccine Mega-Sites In NJ Close Because Of Snowstorm

The other three sites will be open.

Here is what to expect:

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches

  • WHEN...From 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
  • IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult particularly late Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS... A heavy band of snowfall will overspread the area Sunday morning, with snow continuing into Sunday afternoon.
  • Snowfall rates of 1-3 inches per hour will be possible within this heavy band, and isolated snowfall totals in excess of 8 inches will be possible.
  • Gale-force wind gusts are expected on the Atlantic coastal waters adjacent to Delaware and southern New Jersey on Sunday.
  • Any snow that melts on Sunday afternoon will refreeze Sunday night leading to icy conditions especially on untreated roads and bridges/overpasses Monday morning
  • Significant coastal flooding is not expected with this system.

AccuWeather actually projects that some snow was supposed to arrive as early as Saturday night and the amount of snow is predicted to cause travel disruptions over time. But due to snowfall intensity, it should be more manageable for road crews to keep up with across most of the Northeast, according to AccuWeather.

Forecasters say that two separate storms will not merge to produce a powerhouse storm that would cause extreme snowfall rates and blizzard conditions like the last one, according to AccuWeather. Some of the snow may melt as it falls, especially on paved surfaces during the daylight hours on Sunday, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dan Pydynowski said in a release.

Widespread amounts of 3-6 inches of snow are likely to extend all the way from eastern Tennessee to southeastern New Jersey, New York and southern and eastern New England, according to AccuWeather.
