10K Without Power As 73-MPH Winds, Tropical Storm Fay Hit NJ

Here are the NJ towns impacted by Tropical Storm Fay, and what has happened so far. The storm could still cause tornadoes. Here's what else.

NEW JERSEY – The Garden State was dealing with the effects of a tropical storm on Friday that was the first of its kind to directly hit New Jersey since Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Around 10,000 were without power – so far – as the storm could continue to bring 73-mph winds, flooding and even possible tornadoes to the region (see list of affected towns below).

From Hoboken to Ocean City, New Jersey was getting impacted by the storm and dealing with flooding and a number of road closures. Swimming was banned in several Jersey Shore communities, including Beach Haven (see what's happening in your community below).

The storm was moving up the coast and the state, making landfall in New Jersey during the afternoon. Dangerous rip currents were reported in the ocean.

Nearly all of New Jersey, meanwhile, was still in the "cone of uncertainty" as of late Friday afternoon:

The outer edges of the storm were impacting South Jersey, leaving the Wildwood area in a soggy mess.

The National Weather Service issued a tropical storm warning for nine New Jersey counties, and a flash flood warning has been issued elsewhere.

Here is what is expected as the brunt of the storm is expected to still hit during the mid-to-late afternoon:

  • Peak Wind Forecast: 35-45 mph with gusts to 73 mph
  • Window for tropical storm force winds will be open until late this afternoon
  • Last minute efforts to protect property should now be complete. The area remains subject to limited wind damage.
  • Localized storm surge possible. Peak storm surge inundation: The potential for up to 2 feet above ground somewhere within surge prone areas.
  • All flood preparations should be complete. Expect flooding of low-lying roads and property. Stay away from storm surge prone areas. Continue to follow the instructions of local officials.
  • Potential for a few tornadoes Stay within your shelter, keeping informed of the latest tornado situation.
  • A few places may experience tornado damage, along with power and communications disruptions.
  • Locations could realize roofs peeled off buildings, chimneys toppled, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, large tree tops and branches snapped off, shallow-rooted trees knocked over, moving vehicles blown off roads, and small boats pulled from moorings.
