NJ Weather Updates: Latest Snow Totals, School Closings, Crashes

OK, really, stop with the April fool's jokes! Because New Jersey dealt with a surprise April snow on Monday that closed a bunch of schools and made driving miserable. The New Jersey Turnpike was even closed in one section because of an accident (see road conditions, school closings and snow totals below).

The NWS said the "widespread accumulating snow" on Monday would continue to result in sloppy, hazardous travel for the Monday commute, even after the last flakes fell. An inch per hour fell in spots (see road conditions below).

Here are some of the accidents:

• All lanes were closed on the New Jersey Turnpike at mile marker 47.7 in Springfield Township, Burlington County, because of an overturned tractor trailer, New Jersey State Police said Monday. • A major 10-car accident reportedly caused major delays on I-295 on Monday. Read more: 10-Car Crash Causing Major Delays On I-295 In South Jersey.
• A crash also closed one lane of Route 80 east Monday morning, NJDOT said. Read more here: Crash Closes Lane Of Rt. 80 Monday Morning
• An overturned truck closed Route 46 east in Parsippany Monday morning, police said. The truck overturned under the train tracks near Boulevard, on the Mountain Lakes border. Route 46 east is closed, and drivers should take an alternate route. Route 46 west remains open. Police did not say when the road would reopen. Read more: Rt. 46 East Closed In Parsippany
• Two people were taken to the hospital after a two-vehicle crash on I-287 Monday morning. Read more: 2 People Hospitalized Following I-287 Crash: Police
• A pair of crashes were reported in Essex County during the Monday morning rush hour amid slippery, snowy conditions, authorities said. Read more: 2 Crashes In Essex County As Weather Worsens: I-280, US 1&9
• Snowy conditions closed multiple roads across Somerset County and have caused accidents on Papen and Chimney Rock Roads in Bridgewater. Read more: Multiple Car Crashes Reported In Bridgewater Due To Snow

The forecast was enough to cause schools to delay openings, and even close some schools on Monday. Many – if not most – school districts are on spring break this week, though some had to add school time to make up for snow days. Read more: New Jersey School Closings/Delays List For 4/2/18

• Outerbridge Crossing: Speed restrictiond on the Outerbridge Crossing in both directions between New Jersey Side in Perth Amboy and New York Side in Staten Island . Speed restriction of 30 miles per hour.
• Garden State Parkway: Speed restriction on the Garden State Parkway in both directions from Exit 143C - NJ 124 in Irvington Twp to New York State Line in Montvale 35 miles per hour salting and plowing operations.
• New Jersey Turnpike: Accident on the New Jersey Turnpike outer roadway southbound South of Interchange 7A - I-195 in Hamilton Twp. Right and center lanes blocked.

• Garden State Parkway: Accident on the Garden State Parkway local lanes northbound South of Exit 105 - NJ 36 in Tinton Falls. 1 lane blocked.
• New Jersey Turnpike: Accident on the New Jersey Turnpike inner roadway southbound South of Interchange 7A - I-195 in Hamilton Twp. Right lane blocked.
• Goethals Bridge: Speed restriction on the Goethals Bridge in both directions from New Jersey Side in Elizabeth to New York Side in Staten Island of 30 miles per hour due to long term construction.

The band of accumulating snow was no more than 100 miles wide, so a 50-mile shift in the storm track could have meant the difference between several inches of snow, rain or dry weather, according to AccuWeather.

Slippery travel and snow-covered roadways were an issue from the Ohio Valley to the mid-Atlantic. Motorists were not the only ones impacted, according to AccuWeather. Flights in and out of Indianapolis; Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Allentown and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, could face delays and cancellations Sunday evening through Monday morning.
