Pride Month honors the 1969 Stonewall uprising, when members of the gay community and civilians on the street fought back after a police raid on a gay club in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. Police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement. The Stonewall rebellion is considered a watershed event in the fight for LGBT rights in the United States.
