Union Congregational Church

The Oratorio Society of New Jersey (OSNJ) begins rehearsals for the annual fall concert of its 72nd season on Tuesday, September 10, from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm at Union Congregational Church (176 Cooper Avenue, Montclair, NJ). OSNJ is looking for new singers to join the choir. After the first rehearsal, all other rehearsals will take place from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
The fall program features two modern choral masterpieces – Lux Aeterna by Morten Lauridsen and Requiem for the Living by Dan Forrest. Lux Aeterna (premiered in 1997) has been called “extraordinarily beautiful” and “marvelous to sing” (<a href="https://www.stephenlayton.com/lauridsen-lux-aeterna-cd-review-fanfare-usa-2005#:~:text=%22Spectacular!,texts%20and%20my%20musical%20scores." rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Stephen Layton</a>). Requiem for the Living (premiered in 2013) has likewise been described as “beautiful” as it “embraces the listeners in warmth, peacefulness, radiance, and comfort” (<a href="https://cvnc.org/35-years-of-choral-splendor-and-serenity-in-hickory/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">John Lambert</a>). While both pieces set ancient Latin texts to music, the scores are decidedly contemporary and will offer the singers in the choir an opportunity to expand their musical horizons.
We plan to sing Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana for our spring concert, details to come.
The choir is looking for new singers in all vocal parts. No auditions are required, but previous experience singing choral music is preferred. <a href="https://www.zufallhealth.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Zufall Health</a>, a nonprofit community health center headquartered in Dover with a facility in West Orange, incorporates the therapeutic value of art ​into patient care through its Arts In Health program. 
See some of this beautiful art on display at the opening reception of "New Beginnings," a group exhibition, on Thursday, September 12.
In addition to original works of art, guests will be treated to light refreshments, wine, live music, and the opportunity to win a door prize gift basket. No RSVP is necessary.
Arts In Health aims to add another dimension to the care Zufall provides by adding a sense of comfort and beauty to an atmosphere traditionally considered sterile, and helping to alleviate the anxiety of being in a medical setting. On a broader scale, Arts In Health reaches beyond Zufall patients and staff to culturally enrich the community by providing new channels for creative expression.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner &amp; The NAH Podcast&nbsp;Tapped to Celebrate the Legacy of Art in the Atrium and Close Out Their Signature All Female Exhibit 
MORRISTOWN, NJ - Art in the Atrium, Inc. (ATA) is excited to announce a closing reception for W. O. W. - Women's Outstanding Works, ATA’s 32nd Annual Signature exhibit. This special event will take place on Sunday, September 15, 2024, 5pm-7:30pm in the Bickford Theatre at the Morris Museum. The evening will feature actor, director and Grammy-award winning musician, Malcolm-Jamal Warner and the Not All Hood (NAH) podcast. They will bring an exciting discussion celebrating ATA, female artists and explore art as a powerful medium for expressing cultural identity, history, and resilience. 
The all-women exhibit, curated by Onnie Strother and Bisa Wendy Washington, features master artist Nette Forné Thomas and showcases the work of 70 Black and Afro-Latina female artists. This historic exhibit will remain on view through Friday, September 20, 2024, in the Atrium Gallery, located in the Administration &amp; Records Building, which is a part of the Morris County Courthouse Complex, in Morristown, NJ. To start Morristown’s Juneteenth Arts Celebration, more than 250 people attended the opening reception and ATA’s CEO Simone Craig expects another full house for this, the exhibit’s upcoming closing event. 
“We’re thrilled that our W.O.W. - Women’s Outstanding Works Exhibit will conclude with such a ‘wow’ closing event!”&nbsp;
During this celebration, Warner will take the stage with podcast co-hosts Candace Kelley, a Morristown native, TV personality and award-winning journalist who is known for her work and guest commentating on shows including the Black News Channel, Court TV, and Unfiltered with Roland Martin. Co-host, Cultural Curator and producer Weusi Baraka will also take a seat on stage to celebrate ATA and speak to Featured Artist, Nette Forné Thomas. 

A cultural icon, Warner is perhaps best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, his featured role on Fox’s The Resident, the UPN sitcom Malcolm &amp; Eddie, and BET’s Reed Between the Lines. 
“The Cosby Show brought black fine art into the living rooms of viewers all over America. We’re excited to welcome Malcolm-Jamal Warner to Morristown to celebrate Art in the Atrium’s rich legacy and the important role we’ve played in unapologetically highlighting the brilliance of black fine artists and art, right here in Morris County, New Jersey. We’re looking forward to an enlightening and inspiring conversation about the power of women and the arts, and of course, having a good time! Tickets are already selling so don’t miss out on joining us.”

Malcolm-Jamal Warner & The NAH Podcast Celebrate Art in the Atrium

B'nai Shalom

With the increasing possibility of Israeli-Iranian armed confrontation, the upcoming local lecture on “Managing the Threat from Iran: Can War Be Avoided?” by leading Middle East policy expert Daniel Kurtzer couldn’t be timelier. Kurtzer, currently a Professor of Middle East Studies at Princeton University, will address this issue at the B’nai Shalom Culture and Learning Center event on Sunday, September 15th
at 6:30 pm. He will speak at the synagogue, which is located at 300 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange, NJ.
Kurtzer served as United States Ambassador to Israel from 2001 to 2005 and as United States Ambassador to Egypt from 1997 to 2001. During his 20-year career with the State Department, he was instrumental in formulating and executing Middle East policy under several Presidents. 
He served on Secretary of State James Baker’s Middle East peace team that brought about the 1991 Madrid peace conference, and chaired the multilateral peace talks that followed. Secretary of State John Kerry appointed Kurzer to serve on the Secretary’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board. A passionate baseball fan, Kurzer was named the first commissioner of the professional Israel Baseball League in 2007.
