The Bay Shore Historical Society will meet Thursday, September 19th, 2024, at 7:00 PM at the Bay Shore - Brightwaters Public Library (1 South Country Rd., Brightwaters, NY)
 Author and journalist Bill Bleyer will present “The Sinking of The Steamboat Lexington”. Originally commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt as he built his maritime empire in New York, the Steamboat Lexington eventually became the most prestigious steamship on the heavily trafficked Long Island Sound... But in 1840 a fire broke out on the ship, igniting poorly placed bales of cotton which destroyed the ship in minutes. Emergency rafts sank and rescue boats were unable to reach the ship in time.
The meeting is open to the public at no charge. Refreshments will be served. Masks are optional at the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Library as part of COVID-19 safety regulations. The Marty Lyons Foundation's mission is to grant wishes to children with terminal and life threatening illnesses. As an attendee of our Courage Classic, you'll support our Long Island Chapter's mission while enjoying a full day on the green accompanied by contests, prizes, raffles, and a cocktail hour dinner to cap off the evening!

All proceeds go towards supporting essential community services and educational scholarships. </h4>

<h4>This year's Commack Day Festival will feature the Commack Fire Department demonstrating "FIRE PREVENTION" at our event. The department provides fire prevention education and resources to the community. They offer fire safety presentations, distribute educational materials, and offer advice on developing fire escape plans.</h4>
