BEDFORD, NY — There is somebody out there whose unspeakable cruelty needs to be addressed sooner, rather than later, and police hope the key to finding this culprit might come from motorists on I-684 who may have seen something suspicious.

The New York State Police and the SPCA are seeking help from the public to find who is responsible for abandoning five puppies at the Bedford rest area on I-684 on May 6. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the state police at 914-769-2600, and reference case number NY2400213717.

Troopers thanked S.N.A.R.R Animal Rescue Northeast and Adopt-a-Dog, where the puppies are being cared for until they find homes.

"It’s a harrowing reminder of the depths of human cruelty and the desperate need for compassion and action," shelter workers said of the disheartening incident in a statement. "Thankfully, by some miracle, their faint cries for help pierced through the darkness, and they were discovered just in time. Weak, dehydrated, and starving, these helpless souls were clinging to life by a thread. The horror they endured is beyond comprehension."

The shelter told Fox 5 NY that a garbage collector was about to empty a trash bin when he heard the puppies whimpering. When he opened the air-tight container, he found the puppies covered in urine and feces, and contacted authorities.

Adopt-a-Dog stepped up to help the puppies on the long road to recovering and finding homes, but they need help.

"We weren’t prepared for this sudden influx of five fragile lives in need of urgent care," shelter officials said. "Vet bills, medications, and are all immediate necessities, stretching our already thin resources to the brink. In rescue, we know that sometimes the most critical saves are the ones we never saw coming."

The Adopt-a-Dog Shelter promises every dollar donated will go directly towards the puppies' medical expenses and rehabilitation to give them "a chance at a future filled with love and security."

"Vetting is expensive, especially for sickly babies fighting to survive against all odds," the shelter said in its emergency appeal for support. "Your generosity, no matter how small, will make a world of difference in their journey towards healing and hope.

Donations can be made through the FundButter campaign set up for the puppies or on the Adopt-A-Dog website.
