63 LI Beaches Reopen After Bacteria Scare: SC Health Dept.
Suffolk County health officials confirmed that 63 Long Island beaches are open for swimming after being under advisory following heavy rain.
CENTRAL ISLIP, NY — Sixty-three Long Island beaches that were closed for swimming Tuesday after the Suffolk County Health Department issued an advisory following heavy rainfall have reopened, officials told Patch Thursday.
Because the beaches are located in parts of Long Island heavily impacted by stormwater runoff, the health department closed the beaches from swimming due to potentially high levels of bacteria in the water, officials said.
The health department told Patch that while the 63 beaches were open Thursday morning, officials test the water daily, and "one or two" could end up closed again after testing is completed.

In 2022, Patch reported on the closure of multiple Long Island beaches that were also closed to swimming due to high levels of bacteria following heavy rains, including beaches in Bayport and Copiague.
