Pseudo Car Salesman Arrested After Off-Duty BK Cop Shot In Head: NYPD

Randy Jones, 38, stands accused of shooting 66th Precinct Officer Adeed Fayaz — a father of two — in the head Saturday, police said.

Police arrested the suspect using the wounded officer's own handcuffs, said Chief of Detectives James Essig.

BROOKLYN, NY — Cops arrested the man accused of luring an off-duty police officer to Brooklyn with promises of a used car for sale, shooting him in the head and leaving him in "grave" condition, officials announced Tuesday.

Randy Jones, 38, stands accused of shooting Adeed Fayaz — a 26-year-old father of two and 66th Precinct officer — in East New York on Saturday night, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a Tuesday morning press conference.

Cops caught up with Jones in a motel room in Rockland County, just north of New York City, less than 48 hours after the shooting, Sewell said.

"He fled," Sewell said, "But he could not evade our reach."

Chief of Detectives James Essig noted Fayaz's own handcuffs were used on Jones.

"We wanted him to know what he did to that officer and that the officers cuffs were on him," Essig said. "I think it sends a powerful message."

Fayaz received his critical wound after arriving with his brother-in-law at Ruby Street, where he believed he was about to buy a Honda Pilot advertised on a Facebook Marketplace page, officials said.

Jones "jokingly" asked the two if they were armed, and Fayaz said no, although he had a handgun at his hip, officials said.

The pseudo car salesmen grabbed the off-duty cop, put him in a headlock, pointed a pistol at his brother-in-law and demanded cash, officials claim.

Fayaz broke free from the headlock and Jones shot him, officials said.

The brother-in-law grabbed Fayaz's gun and fired at Jones, who squeezed off more shots at the pair, according to Essig.

Jones then jumped into his mom's black 2011 BMW — a TLC vehicle equipped with dashboard cameras — and sped off, Essig said.

Investigators reviewing the dashboard video found footage of Fayaz's brother-in-law, and also the BMW's journey up to Harlem, where Jones was seen getting into a 2010 Acura with a woman and five young children, Essig said.

NYPD investigators working with the US Marshals tracked Jones to a Days Inn by Wyndham motel room in Nanuet, New York, nearly 50 miles from where the shooting occurred, Essig said.

Jones was arrested Monday, officials said.

His girlfriend and her five children —whose ages range between six months to 11-years-old —were also found in the motel room, Essig said.

The woman does not face charges and the children remain in their mother's custody, Essig added.

Essig told reporters that Jones had three prior arrests, one in New York City in 2014 for strangulation and two other arrests in Virginia.

Fayaz, an officer with the Borough Park precinct since 2019, has earned three citations for excellent police duty, according to his NYPD profile.

The Brooklyn cop remains in critical condition at Brookdale Hospital, spurring the Pakistani American Law Enforcement Society to plead for "prayers in this difficult time."
