Child Drowns In Long Island Pool July 4th: Police

It was 1 of 3 on July 4 and the fourth time in 30 days that police in Nassau and Suffolk counties have been called over a child.

EAST MEADOW, NY — A 7-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool in East Meadow on July 4, one of three pool deaths on July 4, according to police.

The East Meadow tragedy is the fourth child-involved accident on Long Island in 30 days. In Central Islip, a 3-year-old found in her family's pool June 11 was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. In Nesconset, a 9-year-old was found in a residential pool by neighbors June 28 and hospitalized in critical condition. In Islandia, a 2-year-old died in a family pool July 2.

Police said they were called at 3:55 p.m. to a home on 2nd Avenue for a child who wasn't breathing from an apparent accident.

When officers arrived, the child had been removed from the pool and CPR was being administered. The child was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead by a physician, police said.
