Man Killed By Train in Garden City Was Adelphi Student

University officials confirm death of 18-year-old freshman.

A man who was tragically struck and killed by a train in Garden City Monday was an Adelphi University student.

Adelphi officials confirmed freshman William Senese, 18, was person who was hit by the LIRR train.

“The entire Adelphi University community is profoundly saddened by the unexpected loss of William Senese, a first-year residential student,” the school announced on its website.

”As a community, we mourn for William and extend our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Eyewitnesses told officials that the victim was on the railroad right-of-way at the Cathedral Avenue crossing when “he laid down on the tracks directly in the path of an oncoming train,” according to Metropolitan Transit Authority officials. He was pronounced dead at the scene just after 1 p.m.

Officials have not officially confirmed why Senese was on the tracks at the time.
