ROOSEVELT, NY — A 76-year-old woman was the victim of an elder scam in Roosevelt on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The woman was walking on Nassau Road near Debevoise Avenue when she was approached by an unknown man offering to help carry her groceries, police said.

The woman obliged. When they arrived at her home, the man explained that he was holding a winning lottery ticket but wasn't able to claim the money, police said.

The victim offered to cash the ticket on his behalf, but the man said he would need something as collateral. She gave various pieces of jewelry, but the man told her that wouldn't be enough and she needed to withdraw $2,000 from the bank, authorities said.

A short time later, an unknown woman driving a white four-door sedan arrived at the victim's home and took them to the Bethpage Federal Credit Union on Nassau Road, where she made the withdrawal, police said.
