Lynbrook Horizon Wins Big at State Press Competition

School newspaper took home 25 awards.

Lynbrook High School’s Horizon newspaper staff earned 25 awards in the annual Empire State Scholastic Press Association competition, continuing their longstanding tradition of success in the esteemed recognition program.

Through the dedication and creativity of its contributors, Horizon received two Silver Awards for Best All Around Publication and Front Page Portfolio. Students achieved a number of individual honors as well. Kerianne McManus received two Silver Awards, one for a news story and another for special topic/event coverage.

Amy Glanzer earned a Silver Award and two Honorable Mentions for feature writing, and Zach Pekale was presented a Silver Award and Honorable Mention for sports writing. Silver Awards were also received by Ana Guitierrez and Maddy Fink for review writing and Ryan Candel for a sports feature.

Bronze Awards were presented to Gabriel Ajzenman, Elaine Chen and Dan Walocha for their editorials, Frankie Tomasso for a news story and Skyler Kessler for a sports photograph. Skyler additionally received a Bronze Award as Best Overall Photographer as well as an Honorable Mention for his other sports photography. Irma Purisic, Elisabeth Di Carmine and Libby Berman together earned three Bronze Awards for their collaborative feature layout portfolio and picture layout/picture story pieces.

Additional Honorable Mentions went to Ajzenman and Andrew Meersand for a collaborative editorial page and both Walocha and Emily Flyer for personality and interview stories.

Schools across New York State compete for these prestigious awards, which are hosted by Syracuse University each year. Horizon staff members work under the guidance of adviser Jessica Sanders.
