WEATHER UPDATE: Storm Winding Down, Icy Roads, Latest Snowfall Totals

Winter weather advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m.

UPDATE (7 p.m.): The National Weather Service issued the following special weather statement:

THE BULK OF THE ACCUMULATING SNOW HAS ENDED ACROSS THE REGION. ANY LEFTOVER SNOW WILL RESULT IN LITTLE TO NO ACCUMULATION. MANY ROADS REMAIN SNOW COVERED AND ICY...ESPECIALLY SECONDARY ROADS. WITH TEMPERATURES FALLING INTO THE SINGLE DIGITS AND LOWER TEENS OVERNIGHT...UNTREATED SURFACES WILL CONTINUE TO BE TREACHEROUS FOR TRAVEL. USE EXTRA CAUTION IF YOU MUST TRAVEL TONIGHT.

Up to an inch of additional snow is possible for Long Island Thursday evening as an early March snowstorm winds down.

A winter storm warning for the region has been canceled, but a winter weather advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m.

Hazardous conditions are expected on the roadways through Thursday evening due to snow and ice covered roads as temperatures drop to around 20 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Snowfall estimates of 6-8 inches look to have been on target. Levittown, Mattituck and Plainview have each recorded 7 inches of snow–tops on the island–according to unofficial NWS reports. See all reported Long Island snowfall totals here.

Schools across the island were closed on Thursday and two townships–Riverhead and Islip–declared winter storm emergencies.

At LaGuardia Airport, a plane skidded off a runway and into a fence while attempting to land Thursday morning. The plane’s nose came to rest just feet from an icy Flushing Bay. Only minor injuries were reported.
