NEW WINDSOR, NY — A prison sentence was handed down to an Orange County man who admitted raping a child.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said on Monday that Alejandro Benitez, 18, of New Windsor, was sentenced to seven years in prison and 20 years of post-release supervision in connection to his previous guilty plea to second-degree rape.

Prosecutors said the imposed sentence was the maximum available under the law.

As part of the sentence, Benitez will also be required to register as a sex offender under the New York Sex Offender Registration Act.

According to the district attorney’s office, Benitez admitted in court that he was 18 years or older and engaged in sexual intercourse with someone who was less than 15 years old.

Hoovler said society has an obligation to protect all children from sexual predators.

“Cases like this one are both sensitive and challenging for police and prosecutors,” he said. “My office will continue to provide support for victims of sexual assault and seek to hold offenders accountable for their actions. I commend the survivor for coming forward and being heard.”
