Hudson Valley Man Tries To Kill Mother, Aunt: Police

Police said the man's mother is paralyzed and his aunt sustained serious and permanent injuries because of the attacks.

NEWBURGH, NY — An Orange County man was charged after being accused of trying to murder his mother and his aunt in the city of Newburgh.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler announced that, on Tuesday, Donnie Smith, 32, of Newburgh, was charged with first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder and two counts of first-degree assault, all felonies.

He was sent back to the Orange County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail, $3 million fully secured bond or $9 million partially secured bond. He is next scheduled for a conference on May 15.

Prosecutors said, on March 31, Smith violently attacked his mother in a home in the city of Newburgh, stabbing her repeatedly with a sharp object in the neck and back.

As he was leaving the residence, police said he encountered his aunt, who he stabbed repeatedly in the neck and back.

After attacking the women, Smith fled and was found and arrested by members of the City of Newburgh Police Department later that same day.

Police said, as a result of the attack, Smith’s mother was paralyzed and his aunt sustained serious and permanent injuries.

Hoovler said the sheer brutality of Smith’s actions is terrifying.

“The life-changing consequences for the victims in this case underscores the dangers of domestic violence,” he said. “I urge all victims of domestic violence to come forward and to know that there are resources and support available to them from my office and agencies such as Fearless! Hudson Valley.”
