Hudson Valley Inmate Kills Another Incarcerated Man: Feds

The man has been charged with first-degree murder, which carries a maximum sentence of death, according to authorities.

OTISVILLE, NY — An inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, Orange County, was accused of killing a fellow inmate.

Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced Wednesday that federal inmate Daniel V. Smith, 63, was charged with one count of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said, on Oct. 26, Smith murdered Patrick Deck, who was also an inmate at FCI Otisville.

First-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of death, according to authorities.

The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Philip Halpern in White Plains.

FCI Otisville is a medium-security federal correctional institution for men. There is also an adjacent minimum-security satellite camp and detention center.

It houses about 1,000 inmates in Orange County.
