Fatal Police Shoot-out On New York State Thruway In Rockland

A BOLO in a homicide case had been issued for the vehicle, state police said.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — The driver of a vehicle stopped by New York State police on I-87 Wednesday was killed after opening fire on the troopers, police said.

The incident started at 2:55 p.m., when troopers stopped a vehicle on the New York State Thruway in Ramapo. It had been identified in a homicide Be On the Lookout (BOLO) notice, police said.

NYSP officials said the driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, opened fire on the troopers, who shot back. One trooper sustained minor injuries and the other trooper was unharmed. The driver was killed.

There is currently no threat to the public and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

New York State troopers closed three lanes of I-87/287 southbound during the investigation, police announced at 3:35 p.m.
