NEW YORK CITY — New York City's famously short billionaire former mayor Michael Bloomberg is standing even taller on the list of the world's richest people, according to Forbes.

Bloomberg now ranks seventh on Forbes' "World's Billionaires List" for 2023, with a net worth of $94.5 billion.

Last year, Bloomberg was worth $82 billion, Forbes found. His net worth is also nearly double what it was in 2020, according to the data.

While Bloomberg had a very good year, the world's wealthiest people overall didn't — although most are still billionaires.

"Globally, we counted 2,640 ten-figure fortunes, down from 2,668 last year," the ranking states.

"Altogether, the planet’s billionaires are now worth $12.2 trillion, a drop of $500 billion from $12.7 trillion in March 2022."

The falling fortunes — which, again, are still astronomical — are best illustrated by Elon Musk.

After Musk's rocky and expensive acquisition of Twitter sank Tesla shares, he fell from number one to number two on the list.

With Musk’s slip from the top slot, Bernard Arnault, who heads luxury goods giant LVMH, is now the richest person in the world. It’s the first time a citizen of France has led the ranking, whose top 10 includes seven U.S. billionaires.

Besides Musk, they are (net worth is reflected as of Wednesday and may not align exactly with their placement on the list):

  • Jeff Bezos, Amazon, worth $126.9 billion;
  • Larry Ellison, Oracle, worth $118.9 billion;
  • Bill Gates, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, worth $109.9 billion;
  • Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway, worth $107.4 billion;
  • Steve Ballmer, Microsoft, worth $90.1 billion.

Another prominent, but now-former, New Yorker also saw his fortunes fall in the last year (in more ways than one).

Donald Trump is now the 1,217th most-wealthy person in the world, with a net worth of $2.5 billion, the ranking found. Last year, he was worth $3 billion.
