ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — A Spring Valley man pleaded guilty to assault in connection to violent struggles at the Rockland County Jail on April 7 that injured a corrections officer, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced.

Shaquille Gage, 21, refused to comply with multiple verbal instructions given to him by Rockland County Corrections officers, prosecutors said. He became aggressive towards the officers and punched one in the face. There were two separate struggles during which Gage continued to resist. A Rockland County Corrections officer was injured and treated at a local hospital.

"The conduct of the defendant in this case is unacceptable and caused injuries to a corrections officer," Walsh said. "Every day corrections officers across the country play a vital role in our justice system, from helping rehabilitate prisoners to keeping them safe."
