2 Police Officers Hurt In Violent Struggle With Shoplifting Suspect

Police said, even after being taken into custody, the suspected shoplifter wasn't done creating mayhem.

PORT CHESTER, NY — Two officers were hurt on Saturday trying to arrest a shoplifting suspect.

The Port Chester Police Department said a violent struggle with the 28-year-old man kicked off after officers told the suspect he was under arrest. The struggle caused displays to be damaged and one officer was head-butted by the suspect. The officer suffered a substantial hematoma above his eye, which required medical attention, according to police officials. The other officer suffered a hand injury.

Police said, even after being taken into custody, the suspected shoplifter wasn't done creating mayhem. He is also accused of damaging the holding cell and nearby areas, by flooding the cell.

He was eventually arraigned and remanded to the county jail.

"There is an increasing trend with suspects traveling into the area to commit crimes such as the above," Port Chester police said in a statement posted on social media. "We have increased Police presence in the known areas and continue to make arrests. Unfortunately, actions like this suspects are occurring more often and it is concerning."
