Rockville Centre Everyday Hero: Alexandra Fischer is 'Enabling the Future'

This week's Everyday Hero is involved in the "Enabling the Future" project helping create prosthetics for children using 3D printers.

Do you know someone making a difference in our community? Patch wants to tell that person’s story in a new series we’re calling “Everyday Heroes.” We are looking to share inspirational and uplifting stories of people who work to change others’ lives for the better.

Today’s nominee was sent in by Caroline Latham.

Relationship to the nominee: I am a teacher and math department chair at Convent of the Sacred Heart. Alex was my student last year at the Convent of the Sacred Heart and both she and I are residents of Rockville Centre. She is a senior this year and has been involved in the “Enabling the Future” project now for 6 months creating 3D printed prosthetic hands for needy children.

Details of good work: In addition to creating prosthetic hands for needy children, Alex has been working hard to raise awareness around the matter. In the month of May, Alex will be speaking to a group of 8th graders at her alma mater, St. Agnes Cathedral School, about the hand project. Hopefully, when they get to high school they can become involved in the project and spread the word about the worthwhile cause. Below is a picture of Alex high fiving Nataniel the day he received his hand.

Why do you feel this person is an Everyday Hero?

I think that Alex is an everyday hero because she has really put her heart and soul into this project. She truly knows the meaning of community service and lives it every day!
