RYE, NY — Rye police are warning the community about suspicious solicitors going door-to-door claiming to be contractors.

"These contractors will knock on your door and tell you that they just happened to be in the neighborhood and noticed that you need your driveway sealed, new steps, or any other work you can think of," police officials said in a warning posted to social media. "These contractors will then ask for a large upfront payment and once you pay, you will never see them again. Other times they will start the work without your authorization in an attempt to pressure you into giving them the job."

Police said these contractors making the rounds on the Sound Shore are not trained, licensed or insured. Officials said professional contractors will never go door-to-door to solicit business.

Authorities said that anyone soliciting must vetted by the police department and issued a solicitor’s permit by City Hall. Officials are asking the public to report any suspicious circumstances.
