5K Reward Offered In Fatal Pedestrian Strike On Long Island Expressway: Police

The suspect stopped in nearby Ronkonkoma to inspect his vehicle, a light-colored, possibly gray Ford Focus hatchback, police said.

RONKONKOMA, NY — Suffolk Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 fast cash reward for information leading to an arrest in a hit-and-run crash that left a man dead on the Long Island Expressway in Ronkonkoma last year.

Robert Twiford, 61, of Melville, parked his vehicle on the off-ramp of the eastbound Long Island Expressway at Exit 60, got out of the vehicle, and, while in the lane of travel, he was struck by a vehicle that sped away at around 8 p.m. on Dec. 5, Suffolk police said.

A short time later, the driver of the fleeing vehicle stopped on Garrity Avenue in Ronkonkoma and got out of a light-colored, possibly gray, 2015 to 2018 Ford Focus hatchback, to examine it with a flashlight, according to police.

Twiford, 61, of Melville, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The crime is being investigated as a leaving the scene of an accident with injury without reporting by Suffolk's Major Case Unit.

A fast cash reward would be issued within seven days of an arrest in the case.
