FARMINGVILLE, NY — Brookhaven officials are offering a 50 percent discount on about 12,000 overdue parking violations — amounting to over $3.5 million in outstanding tickets — through the town's amnesty program from Feb. 15 through March 15.

The offer will be mailed in February to people with outstanding violations who are eligible for the program, though violations issued after Dec. 31 are not eligible.

Brookhaven's Parking Violations Bureau processes citations issued by the town's code enforcement, fire marshals, and bay constables, as well as the Suffolk County police and sheriff's departments, and Metropolitan Transportation Authority police.

Supervisor Ed Romaine said the program "gives people the opportunity to pay the fine at a discounted rate and clear their debt without the need for a hearing."

"I urge anyone who has not paid their fines to do so and take advantage of the discount," Romaine said. "When the amnesty program ends, we will pursue those who continue to ignore their responsibility, and they will be required to pay the entire fine with significant penalties."

Tickets can be issued for a number of reasons, including unauthorized parking in handicapped parking spots or parking illegally in fire zones. Brookhaven's Traffic Court meets to adjudicate summonses that are challenged. For more information, call 451-TOWN (8696).

Payments can be made in-person at Brookhaven Town Hall, by mail or online at www.BrookhavenNY.Gov/Amnesty.
