Arrests, Repercussions After Patients Fight At Carmel Facility

One of the men struck the other in the head with a cane, police said.

CARMEL, NY – Carmel police officers were called April 20 about an assault at an in-patient treatment facility in the hamlet of Carmel.

The responding detective found the two patients involved in the fight, one of whom was bleeding from his head. Investigation determined that the two men had assaulted each other, culminating with one striking the other in the head with a cane, police said.

Both subjects were transported to Putnam Hospital Center, where they were treated for their injuries and later released into the custody of CPD officers.

James Montanez of Pleasant Valley was charged with second-degree assault, a felony.

Jason Colon of the Bronx was charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.

However, police discovered that Colon was wanted on two outstanding warrants out of New Jersey. Colon was arraigned by Carmel Town Justice Jacobellis and sent to the Putnam County Correctional facility as a fugitive from justice.

Montanez was released pending a future court appearance in the Town of Carmel Justice Court.
