LANSDALE, PA — The North Penn School District has announced special programming for the upcoming eclipse on April 8, in which the moon will cover about 90 percent of the sun as it crosses its face.

Merck West Point has donated more than 14,000 pairs of eclipse glasses for the entire school district to watch the event.

"This is a rare and exciting astronomical event that presents a unique opportunity for students to learn about science, space, and the wonders of the natural world," the district said in a statement.

Unlike other districts, North Penn is not closing and sending students home early. They will play a video shortly before the eclipse created by the high school's astronomy club. The video will describe the eclipse and offer safety precautions.

They'll then don their glasses to watch the event. The Merck glasses "meet the recommended safety requirements for the event," school district officials said.
