Pittsburgh Pizzeria Nationally Recognized

Pittsburgh has several pizza places that often are nationally lauded. One of them has been recognized yet again.

(Mineo's.)

PITTSBURGH, PA — You wouldn't think Squirrel Hill has much in common with such exotic locations such as Vilnius, Lithuania; Katmandu, Nepal and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. But some of the world's best pizzerias can be found in those places.

That's according to readers of The New York Times, who flooded the newspaper with their opinions on their favorite pizza joints after a piece (get it?) the Times did on the best places to get a slice or several of pie. One of the pizzerias that made the cut for a followup article was Mineo's, whose original Squirrel Hill location prompted two additional ones in Mt. Lebanon and Hampton.

Raved Mineo's regular Stephen Quigley of Pittsburgh in the Time article: "This pizza is different from any other I have ever tasted. "The cheese is heavy, it must rest before eating and does not travel well. The pepperonis are Pittsburgh style, quarter size, and the crust is al dente. I’ve never eaten crust like this anywhere."

Recognition in the Times is the latest accolade for Mineo's, which has been recognized locally, statewide and nationally over the years for the quality of its pie. But although being lauded is nothing new, the pizzeria still is flattered over its mention in the Times.

"What an honor!" a post on Mineo's Facebook page stated on Sunday. "Thank you New York Times for featuring us, and thank you to all of our customers."
