Six High-Tier Powerball Winners in RI

$1 million winners were sold in Cranston and Warwick; $100,000 and $50,000 winners were also sold.

CRANSTON, RI—Nobody won the $1.58 billion Powerball jackpot in Rhode Island, but six people did score some serious cash in Wednesday night’s record drawing, according to the Rhode Island Lottery Commission.

Two $1 million winning tickets were sold at lottery retailers in Cranston and Warwick. Two $100,000 tickets were sold, one each in Providence and Pawtucket. And a pair of $50,000 winners were sold in Coventry and Warwick.

Those were the high-tier prizes. In all, 89,984 people won something in the drawing. The grand total for winnings in Rhode Island was $2,762,716.

A Coventry man on Thursday claimed the $50,000 winning Powerball ticket sold at Stop & Shop on Tigue Avenue.

A 20-year Navy veteran, when asked what he’d do with the winnings, the man said “well I will not be using the money won to travel.”

The man, who asked that his name not be published, said he’s already been around the world several times thanks to his Navy service. Instead, “He wants to simply enjoy life, and this win will certainly help him do so,” the lottery commission said.

The man matched four numbers and the Powerball—numbers that represent his birthday and that he’s always played.

Another winner, John Diggle of Greenville, claimed a $100,000 ticket sold at Tavares News in Pawtucket. He also matched four numbers and the Powerball, but he used the PowerPlay feature to double his prize.

A 40-year National Grid employee, Diggle is planning to tuck his money aside for retirement.

He too has been playing the same numbers, which represent his parents’ birthdays.

The two $1 million prizes have not been claimed.
