Williamson Schools Director Denies Assault Allegation

Williamson schools chief Mike Looney issued a statement denying assault allegations Thursday.

FRANKLIN, TN -- Williamson County Schools director Mike Looney issued a statement Thursday denying allegations he assaulted a student at Franklin High School earlier this week.

"I apologize to the community for the distraction that this accusation has caused. I completely deny the allegations and have faith that the legal process will result in a positive resolution. Until this is resolved, I can’t comment further. I look forward to sharing more when possible. Meanwhile, I will maintain my focus on serving the students, teachers, and staff of Williamson County Schools," Looney said.

In a statement issued Wednesday after Looney surrendered to the sheriff on the simple assault charge, Franklin Police said Looney tried to force a student out of the school and into his car.

"[Tuesday], Franklin Police Officers and paramedics were dispatched to Franklin High School for a reported psychological emergency. While working with the student, the student's mother, and school staff to transport the student to the hospital, Dr. Mike Looney, Williamson County Schools Superintendent, abruptly entered the conference room, grabbed the student by her arm, and forced her out of the school and to his vehicle. Officers intervened and had on-scene paramedics transport the student to the emergency room for evaluation," FPD said.

Meanwhile, District Attorney General Kim Helper told The Tennessean she has asked for a special prosecutor to be appointed to handle the matter.

"I have several employees with spouses that work in the school system, (and) it would not be ethically appropriate for this office to handle that case," Helper told the newspaper.
