In a statement made after the initial charge, Franklin Police said Looney attempted to force a student into his car.

"Franklin Police Officers and paramedics were dispatched to Franklin High School for a reported psychological emergency. While working with the student, the student's mother, and school staff to transport the student to the hospital, Dr. Mike Looney, Williamson County Schools Superintendent, abruptly entered the conference room, grabbed the student by her arm, and forced her out of the school and to his vehicle," FPD said in a statement. "Officers intervened and had on-scene paramedics transport the student to the emergency room for evaluation."

Looney denied the assault claim.

"I apologize to the community for the distraction that this accusation has caused. I completely deny the allegations and have faith that the legal process will result in a positive resolution. Until this is resolved, I can't comment further. I look forward to sharing more when possible. Meanwhile, I will maintain my focus on serving the students, teachers, and staff of Williamson County Schools," Looney said in a statement after he surrendered on the first charge.

Looney was not disciplined by the school board, which viewed footage of the incident. That footage is not being released to protect the student's identity.

In the meantime, Looney has gone on medical leave. He is due in court April 25.
