Williamson Schools Director Surrenders On Assault Charge

Williamson County Director of Schools Mike Looney turned himself on a simple assault charge following an incident at Franklin High Tuesday.

FRANKLIN, TN — Williamson County Director of Schools Mike Looney surrendered to the sheriff’s department on a simple assault charge Wednesday, the district confirmed. Franklin Police allege Looney grabbed a student and tried to remove her from the school and into his car.

The warrant was issued by a county magistrate against Looney earlier Wednesday and he surrendered Wednesday night.

In a statement, WCS Director of Communications Carol Birdsong said Looney disputes the charge but surrendered so the necessary paperwork could be completed.

“This misdemeanor charge apparently stems from an incident which took place Tuesday at Franklin High School while he and others were assisting a student in crisis,” Birdsong wrote in a statement.

“There were multiple witnesses on hand who dispute this accusation of simple assault, and we believe this charge is without merit and will not stand.”

In a statement of its own, Franklin Police said Looney tried to force a student out of the school and into his car.

“Yesterday, Franklin Police Officers and paramedics were dispatched to Franklin High School for a reported psychological emergency. While working with the student, the student’s mother, and school staff to transport the student to the hospital, Dr. Mike Looney, Williamson County Schools Superintendent, abruptly entered the conference room, grabbed the student by her arm, and forced her out of the school and to his vehicle,” FPD said in a statement. “Officers intervened and had on-scene paramedics transport the student to the emergency room for evaluation.

“Today, those officers consulted with the Williamson County Magistrate, who issued an arrest warrant, charging Dr. Looney with Assault.”

This is a developing story.
