<p>deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum and The Trustees, in collaboration with Fugitive Productions, is hosting “Pondside Stories,” a new offering of “True Stories Told Live.” Join us for a fabulous evening of storytelling and community! Eight storytellers — several experienced, competition winners along with some local community tellers — will be sharing their stories.</p>
<p>Fugitive Stories brings the craft of true stories told live to audiences in Boston’s western ’burbs. Each night is unique and they never fail to entertain. Hearing a true story in a live performance is fun, moving, and transformative. Fugitive Stories’ evenings intimately reveal what we all have in common, making people feel more human and more alive. You will laugh and sometimes shed a few tears. Every event opens a door to a memory, a new friend, or to your heart. Humanity’s earliest stories were about survival, hope, loss, love, and courage. Today’s stories echo the same themes.</p>

<p>Join us for an artist-led workshop and material demonstration in which pigments are derived from the leaves, petals, and berries that thrive on the deCordova campus. Venture out on a guided walk with artist Ellie Irons to collect and gather the blossoms and leaves that green the Sculpture Park. After the walk, enjoy a demonstration with Ellie Irons to investigate the gathering, cultivating, and processing of these natural materials on an intimate scale. Share conversation with the artist around the wider implications of labeling certain plant forms as “alien”, “exotic” or “invasive” and develop your own deeper plant-human connection.</p>

<p><em>About the Artist:</em></p>
<p>Ellie Irons is an artist, educator, and parent living and working on Mohican land in Troy, New York, USA. Working across media—from watercolor paintings to un-lawning experiments—her practice combines socially engaged art and ecology fieldwork. Recent work involves collaborations about and with spontaneous urban plants (aka weeds), including co-founding the Next Epoch Seed Library and the Environmental Performance Agency. Ellie received a BA from Scripps College, an MFA from Hunter College, completed her PhD in arts practice Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2021, researching forms of artistic practice that cultivate plant-human solidarity. Her work has been covered by publications ranging from <em>Art in America</em> to the <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em>. Her book <em>Feral Hues: A Guide to Painting with Weeds</em> was published in 2023 by Publication Studio Hudson. She serves as the community science educator for the Sanctuary for Independent Media’s NATURE Lab.</p>

This course, led by accomplished artist Will Close, will engage your senses and connect you more deeply with nature through the use of nature journaling and field sketching. With a balance of classroom and field time, you will be guided through various foundational techniques designed to strengthen your observation and drawing skills.</p>
<p>Explore the changing colors of the natural world this fall season. All skill levels are welcome. Come for just one session, or build upon your skills throughout the series and attend week after week.</p>
<p>All you will need for this program is a sense of adventure and a creative spirit. All other supplies will be provided including sketch pads, pencils, charcoal, and extra fun art making materials.</p>

About Drawing from Nature: A Sketching Series

<p>Join artist Anna Von Mertens and art historian Jennifer Roberts as the two explore the extraordinary in the ordinary. Their conversation will paint a portrait of the trailblazing astronomer Henrietta Leavitt (1868 – 1921) and include the book project published this September by the MIT Press, which emerged from their shared interest in Leavitt’s remarkable story. Anna Von Mertens will review the methodologies behind Leavitt’s work and the significance of her foundational discovery that enabled the measurement of largescale astronomical distance for the first time, launching modern cosmology. Von Mertens and Roberts will discuss the artworks they made in response to Leavitt’s legacy, including photographs by Roberts using a macro lens to bring forward the material richness of the astronomical glass plate photographs Leavitt studied, and drawings of starlight captured in emulsion by Von Mertens based on some of those glass plates.</p>
<p>Learn from Von Mertens and Roberts as the two reveal their collaborative process, the power of attention in observation, artistic creation, and the making of meaning.</p>

<p><em>About the Speakers:</em></p>
<p>Anna Von Mertens’s forthcoming book <em>Attention Is Discovery: The Life and Legacy of Astronomer Henrietta Leavitt</em> (Fall 2024 MIT Press) received an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Public Understanding of Science and Technology book grant. Her 2018–2019 exhibition Measure, presented at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute, traveled to the University Galleries of Illinois State University and Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College in 2023. She is the recipient of a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she studied dark matter as a structuring force in our universe, and a United States Artists Fellowship in Visual Arts. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College; Berkeley Art Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; RISD Museum; Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery; and Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College. Von Mertens is represented by Elizabeth Leach Gallery, Portland, Oregon.</p>
<p>Jennifer L. Roberts is an art historian whose scholarship focuses on the interface between the arts and the natural sciences, the history and theory of craft and materiality, and the history of print. After receiving her A.B. in English and Art History from Stanford (1992) and her Ph.D. in History of Art from Yale (2000), she joined the Harvard faculty in 2002. She held the Slade Professorship in Fine Arts at Cambridge University in 2019 and delivered the <a href="https://www.nga.gov/research/casva/meetings/mellon-lectures-in-the-fine-arts/roberts-2021.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Mellon Lectures</a> at the National Gallery of Art in 2021.</p>
<p>In her scholarship and curating, Roberts has consistently emphasized the material intelligence of art and its makers and the challenge of storing and transmitting meaning through space and time. Her first book, <em>Mirror-Travels: Robert Smithson and History</em> (2004), examines everything from crystallography to eschatology to show how Smithson built material models of time to confront the erasures of traditional history. Her book <em>Transporting Visions: The Movement of Images in Early America</em> (2014), forges a material history of visual communication by tracing the literal transportation of pictures through the swamps, forests, oceans, and cities of the Anglo-American landscape between 1760 and 1860. In 2012 she curated the exhibition <em>Jasper Johns/In Press: The Crosshatch Works and the Logic of Print</em> for the Harvard Art Museums. That project sparked her interest in the generative power of the physical operations of printing – reversal, pressure, transfer, incision, etc. – and led to her forthcoming book with Princeton University Press, based on her Mellon Lectures, titled <em>Contact: Art and the Pull of Print</em>.</p>

<p>Join us in the gallery for an evening with Deb Talan, an American singer-songwriter best known for being part of the folk-pop duo the Weepies. Born in Western Massachusetts, Deb Talan has been writing songs since she was 14 years old. Playing clarinet, piano, and guitar throughout her childhood and early adulthood, Talan started a band in Portland, Oregon with her friend Mark, named Hummingfish.</p>
<p>After moving back to the east coast, Talan began playing solo in Boston coffee houses, opened shows for Catie Curtis<em> (a songwriter hero of hers)</em> met up with Steve Tannen and formed The Weepies. The duo played shows all over the country and the world.</p>
<p>After making 5 records in Los Angeles, surviving breast cancer, and grappling with mental health issues, Talan has a lot she could say these days. She prefers to listen. But playing songs for people is a close second. For Deb Talan, music heals.</p>
